Monkey See Monkey Do

year of the monkey 2016

Last Monday, the 8th of February, was the first day of the Chinese Lunar Calendar for 2016, the year of the Red Monkey. If you’re new to Chinese New Year, then you may find it fun to familiarise yourself with what it’s all about. Festivities and feasts galore, it’s a fantastic celebratory time. There are sure to be numerous events on in your local area over the coming weeks, so if you like amazing food, traditional Chinese music, dancers, martial artist displays and more, then check your local scene and get involved.

The history, lore and tradition behind Chinese New Year are also very interesting. There are five elements of the Chinese calendar – Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth. As the colour of Fire is connected to Red, 2016 is the Red Fire Monkey year. In short, the monkey is smart, naughty, wily and vigilant. Being so quick and agile, he may take you by surprise, so you’ll need to outsmart the cheeky bugger at every turn. 😉

Happy Chinese New Year, and best of luck with your endeavours in 2016!
