Back to the Books

Many parents in Queensland this week will be taking deep breaths as they send their kids back to school for another year. The Australia day public holiday is tomorrow (yes!), so it’ll be a short one, but soon enough their holiday boredom will turn into school boredom. If you haven’t already, there are loads of back-to-school sales occurring right now, so it’s a good time to hit the shops and grab some bargains.

On another note, well-timed with the start of the semester is the upcoming “Safer Internet Day”, on the 9th of February. This age of technology has done wonders for quick and easy communication, education, and sharing, but this ease of use can actually be quite dangerous; Cyberbullying is a very real threat to children of all ages. Safer Internet Day is a global celebration intended to raise awareness of cyberbullying and safe internet practices that can be implemented to avoid online drama. A virtual presentation by the day’s spokespersons, aimed at upper primary students, will assist students to:

  • understand the possible consequences of posting images
  • be a good bystander
  • communicate online respectfully
  • understand how to report inappropriate material and contact

If you or your children miss it, don’t worry, a quick Google search will reveal a ton of resources online for handling this topic. And it’s not only a c   oncern for primary aged students, but for people of all ages – even in a lot of adult workplaces, these issues can arise. It always pays to be mindful of the ever changing school environment, and we wish you all the best with your little ones over the coming school year. 🙂
