Last Wednesday, Robertson Gardens was privileged to host a special event in the Musgrave Room, organised by Brisbane South PHN in recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day. The day began with a moment of deep cultural significance that set the tone for everything that followed, a traditional Smoking Ceremony.
The Meaning Behind the Smoking Ceremony
The Smoking Ceremony is an ancient Indigenous ritual that has been practiced for thousands of years. By burning carefully selected native plants, the smoke is used to ward off negative spirits, cleanse people and places, and promote health and well-being. It is not just symbolic, but deeply spiritual, representing renewal, protection, and the hope of a brighter future.
Led by Knowledge Holders
The ceremony was conducted by Shannon and Tim from Tribal Experiences, who shared their cultural knowledge and guided attendees through this powerful tradition. Guests were invited to walk through the smoke, receiving its blessings as part of the Welcome to Country before the day’s proceedings.
This moment created a sense of connection, reflection, and unity among all who attended. It reminded us of the importance of acknowledging Country and respecting the wisdom of Indigenous custodians, while also fostering a space of openness for the important conversations that followed.
The Function and Community Support
After the Smoking Ceremony, guests gathered in the Musgrave Room for the World Suicide Prevention Day function. This meaningful event brought people together to raise awareness, encourage conversation, and highlight the importance of suicide prevention in our communities.
In the Atrium Room, a variety of vendors and organisations offered information and resources, showcasing the strength of community collaboration and support.
A Powerful Beginning to a Meaningful Day
The Smoking Ceremony set the tone for the entire event, one of healing, respect, and togetherness. We are grateful to Shannon and Tim from Tribal Experiences for sharing this cultural tradition with us, and to Brisbane South PHN for organising such an impactful day.
At Robertson Gardens, we feel honoured to provide a space where tradition, community, and meaningful causes can come together.
